Georgia’s public schools enrolled more than 1.7 million students, as stated in the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment figures were greatest in elementary grades at 787,206 (45.9%), followed by middle school at 388,733 (22.7%) and high school at 539,092 (31.4%).
Georgia schools continue facing high rates of chronic absenteeism after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to Georgia Department of Education data. Efforts to address this include a new statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public campaign, and support measures for high-need districts to increase attendance, according to GaDOE.
In 2025, legislation was enacted in Georgia updating school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The new law implements enhanced reporting and coordinates with programs that help students earn diplomas through alternate pathways.
As of 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, a figure that outperforms the national average of 15:1.
