Reports from the Georgia Department of Education say Berkmar High School registered 454 African American students in the 2024-25 school year, which represents a 14.8% decrease from the prior year.
Data indicated the total enrollment at Berkmar High School reached 2,839 students for 2024-25. African American students accounted for 16% of the population, making them the second-largest demographic group at the school.
The school belongs to Gwinnett County School District, which is headquartered in Lawrenceville.
In a comparison of the district’s 140 schools, Grayson High School had the highest number of African American students enrolled in 2024-25, with a count of 2,089.
The National Center for Education Statistics reports that public school students in Georgia comprised roughly 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native and 0.1% Pacific Islander.
Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools since the pandemic. In 2024, 20.7% of students missed at least 10% of school days, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In response, GaDOE implemented new measures including a real-time attendance dashboard, a statewide awareness campaign and targeted support in high-need districts to improve daily attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia legislators approved changes to attendance laws that prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The revised law adds mandatory reporting and coordinates with alternative diploma-earning opportunities for students.
By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, a rate better than the national average of 15:1.
