Berkmar Middle School counted 82 Asian students enrolled for 2024-25, an increase of 10.8% compared to the prior year, reports the Georgia Department of Education.

Total enrollment for Berkmar Middle School reached 1,029 students in the 2024-25 year. Asian students composed 8% of those enrolled, making them the third-largest student group at the school.

The campus is part of the Gwinnett County School District, headquartered in Lawrenceville.

Among the 140 schools in Gwinnett County School District, North Gwinnett High School reported the largest number of Asian students in 2024-25, enrolling 1,023 students.

Over 1.7 million students attended Georgia’s public schools, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment peaked at the elementary level with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 in middle school (22.7%) and 539,092 in high school (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, based on Georgia Department of Education data. In efforts to improve attendance, GaDOE implemented a new statewide plan featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public outreach campaign, and specialized help for districts in greatest need.

Legislation approved in 2025 by Georgia lawmakers revised school attendance rules to prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The new law also introduces different reporting rules and aligns with alternative pathways for students to obtain diplomas.

By 2026, Georgia posted an average student-teacher ratio of about 14:1, lower than the national average of 15:1.
