Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, based on Georgia Department of Education data. In efforts to improve attendance, GaDOE implemented a new statewide plan featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public outreach campaign, and specialized help for districts in greatest need.
Legislation approved in 2025 by Georgia lawmakers revised school attendance rules to prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The new law also introduces different reporting rules and aligns with alternative pathways for students to obtain diplomas.
By 2026, Georgia posted an average student-teacher ratio of about 14:1, lower than the national average of 15:1.
