Chronic absenteeism continues to affect Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE has implemented a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness campaign, and targeted support for districts identified as high need to improve attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia legislators approved updates to school attendance laws that prohibit expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The new law also includes additional reporting requirements and supports programs that provide alternative diploma pathways for students.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-teacher ratio was about 14:1, compared to the national average of 15:1.
