A former deputy director from Gwinnett County’s Department of Information Technology has been taken into custody following an investigation into financial misconduct involving altered documents. The arrest occurred on May 27, 2025.

The situation began on May 15 when the Gwinnett County Treasury Division detected suspicious activity concerning a vendor payment. They promptly informed the Gwinnett County Police Department, which initiated an investigation targeting James Smith, who served as the Deputy Director of Infrastructure and Operations within the department.

Investigators discovered that Smith allegedly manipulated financial documents in an effort to divert county funds. This led to establishing probable cause for charging him with Computer Theft, Computer Forgery, and Criminal Attempt to Commit Theft by Taking.

Smith was apprehended and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail facing these charges. The investigation is still active and ongoing.
