Gwinnett County has been nationally recognized for its sustainability planning, receiving the Quality of Life Award from the American Planning Association’s Sustainable Communities Division. This accolade was presented during the 2025 National Planning Conference in Denver.
The award is given to projects that enhance community well-being through exceptional planning efforts. Gwinnett’s 2045 Unified Plan was highlighted for its comprehensive and inclusive approach to future growth, infrastructure, housing, and environmental stewardship. The plan ensures that residents’ needs are central to the county’s long-term vision.
“This recognition is a testament to the collaborative work of our Planning and Development team, community stakeholders and residents, all who helped shape a plan that reflects Gwinnett’s values,” stated Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “The plan helps guide Gwinnett’s future while staying true to what makes this community such a great place to call home.”
The APA’s Awards for Excellence in Sustainability are competitive, celebrating national efforts in sustainability through effective planning. Other awardees include Contra Costa County, California; the city of Danville, Virginia; and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission.
The 2045 Unified Plan addresses population growth, climate resilience, housing diversity, and mobility, all while promoting equity and sustainability across Gwinnett County’s 437 square miles.
