Georgia’s public school system served over 1.7 million students during the period, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Chronic absenteeism continues to affect Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In response, GaDOE launched a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and targeted resources for districts most in need to improve daily attendance rates.
During 2025, state legislators updated Georgia’s school attendance laws, prohibiting expulsion solely for absenteeism. The revised law also added new reporting requirements and supports programs allowing students to earn diplomas through alternate methods.
In 2026, the typical student-to-teacher ratio in Georgia was about 14:1, surpassing the U.S. national average of 15:1.
