Rep. Lucy McBath, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Georgia’s 7th district, marked the anniversary of Head Start and addressed issues ranging from gun violence to voting rights in a series of recent posts on her social media account.
On May 18, 2026, McBath recognized the legacy of the federal Head Start program, stating: “Today, we celebrate 61 years of Head Start and the more than 40 million children and families it has served, including right here in Georgia’s 6th District. Strong communities start with strong foundations, and Head Start makes that possible.”
The following day, May 19, she responded to reports of violence at a place of worship in California: “Once again in America, a faith community has been devastated by gun violence. My heart is with the victims of the senseless shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, their families, and all those across the country who are grieving what appears to be an anti-Muslim attack.”
On May 20, McBath referenced her personal background while discussing ongoing challenges to voting rights: “I’m a child of the Civil Rights Movement, and I know what attacks on voting rights and Black representation look like. We’ve seen this before. Efforts to silence Black voices and weaken voting protections are a direct attack on our democracy and our hard-fought progress.”
McBath was first elected to Congress in 2018 after defeating incumbent Karen Handel. She currently resides in Marietta and holds a Bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University (1982). In 2024, she secured reelection by defeating Jeff Criswell with over 74 percent of the vote.
