In the 2024-25 school year, McConnell Middle School enrolled 120 multiracial students, reflecting a 17.6% increase from the prior year, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

Total enrollment reached 2,011 students that year, with multiracial students comprising 6% of the student body and representing the school’s second-smallest demographic group.

McConnell Middle School is situated in the Gwinnett County School District, which has its main office in Lawrenceville.

Brookwood High School had the largest enrollment of multiracial students in Gwinnett County School District, reporting 187 students in the 2024-25 school year.

The National Center for Education Statistics found that Georgia public school enrollment was about 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

Chronic absenteeism continues to be a challenge for Georgia schools since the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reports. The agency instituted a new statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public campaign, and targeted help for higher-need districts.

Georgia lawmakers approved legislation in 2025 revising school attendance policies by prohibiting expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The measure also introduced stricter reporting requirements and aligned attendance laws with alternative diploma pathways.

As of 2026, Georgia recorded an average student-teacher ratio of roughly 14:1, lower than the national ratio of 15:1.
