After the pandemic, chronic absenteeism persists in Georgia, where 20.7% of students missed 10% or more school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. GaDOE responded with a statewide initiative that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and focused aid to districts with the greatest need to help improve attendance rates.
Georgia lawmakers passed legislation in 2025 amending school attendance rules to prohibit expulsions based solely on absenteeism. The new law also introduces expanded reporting standards and supports pathways for students to earn diplomas through alternative programs. Details are available here.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio stood at about 14:1, which is a lower ratio than the national average of 15:1.
