Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. In response, GaDOE introduced a statewide initiative, rolling out a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and targeted assistance for districts in greatest need to encourage regular school attendance.
In 2025, Georgia legislators updated school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also mandates additional reporting and supports programs allowing students to complete their diplomas through alternative methods.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, compared with the national average of 15:1.
