After the pandemic, chronic absenteeism has remained a widespread concern among Georgia schools. In 2024, 20.7% of students missed 10% or more of school days, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address the issue, the department began a statewide campaign, launching an attendance dashboard, raising public awareness, and giving targeted assistance to schools with greater needs to encourage more consistent attendance.
Georgia legislators updated school attendance law in 2025 to prohibit expulsions based solely on absenteeism. The new bill adds reporting obligations and supports alternative diploma pathways for students.
As of 2026, Georgia’s reported student-teacher ratio was about 14:1, a figure that outperforms the national average of 15:1.
