Three former Georgia Tech athletes are being recognized for their contributions to racial and social justice when they integrated sporting programs at the school.
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) recently announced that Harvey Webb, Eddie McAshan and Jan Hilliard are Georgia Tech’s recipients of the inaugural ACC UNITE Award, according to a Tech press release.
The university said that the former athletes had made lasting impact at the school that would not go unrecognized.
"The ACC UNITE Award was created to honor individuals affiliated with the league who have made an impact in the areas of racial and social justice," the press release said. "An initiative of the ACC’s Committee for Racial and Social Justice (CORE – Champions of Racial Equity), the award was developed and approved by the ACC’s 15 member institutions."
The ACC is celebrating the first male and female athletes of color to integrate into athletic teams at each ACC institute, as part of the first year of the award, the release said.
Webb integrated the school’s basketball program in 1967 as a freshman, McAshan integrated the varsity football program in 1970 and Hilliard integrated women's basketball in 1975.
Each school will continue to select one male and one female for the ACC UNITE Award annually, according to the release.
