School safety was at the head of a recent meeting as school leaders met with staff, community members, parents and law enforcement to discuss concerns after a student was shot to death in the area earlier this month.
"We just want to know what's going on and what's being done," Clayton Bolds, who has two children in Gwinnett County Public Schools, said in a FOX 5 Atlanta report.
The so-called “Code-Red” meeting was focused on school safety and what measures authorities are taking to make sure students are kept safe.
The meeting was convened in the wake of 17-year-old Norcross High School student DeAndre Henderson being shot and killed on Oct. 26 during school hours less than a mile from campus, the report said. That pushed the number of overall violent incidents that have taken place in Gwinnett County Schools over the last several weeks to at least three.
While insisting that there are no quick fixes to resolving all of the problems, Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure assured that the department is working closely with local schools to combat crime; the report said. He added that parents need to also remember and understand that safety begins at home.
