A lawsuit filed in the Superior Court of Fulton County by U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock's (D-GA) reelection campaign hopes to have early voting allowed in the days leading up to the runoff election against Republican challenger Herschel Walker.
This move comes alongside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia, who joined the "Warnock for Georgia" campaign in filing the lawsuit.
"Illegal attempts to block Saturday voting are another desperate attempt by career politicians to squeeze the people out of their own democracy and to silence the voices of Georgians," Quentin Fulks, Warnock for Georgia campaign manager, told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) has already moved to challenge the suit, saying, "If recent elections prove one thing, it’s that voters expect candidates to focus on winning at the ballot box -- not at the courthouse."
Across the state, current law establishes that Saturday early voting will always be prohibited if a holiday falls within two days of it. With Thanksgiving falling on Thursday, Nov. 24, and a holiday that used to observe Confederate General Robert E. Lee's birthday on Friday, Nov. 25, that means Saturday early voting would be prohibited. The actual election will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
