State Representative Sam Park, House Minority Whip, has introduced the Limiting the Increase of Money's Influence Today Act (LIMIT Act) in an effort to eliminate leadership committees. These committees currently allow legislative and executive leaders to raise and spend unlimited political campaign contributions without any restrictions on the amount of money individuals, special interests, and businesses can donate to political candidates.

According to Rep. Park, the aim of the LIMIT Act is to ensure that elected officials serve all Georgians, regardless of their financial means. By eliminating the ability to accept unlimited campaign contributions, this legislation seeks to limit the influence of money in politics and protect the voice and power of all Georgians.

Porsha White, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at End Citizens United, commends Rep. Park's bill for its potential to restore balance in Georgia's political landscape. She emphasizes the importance of hearing all voices in a thriving democracy, rather than allowing wealthy donors, special interest groups, and large corporations to dominate the political process.

The introduction of leadership committees in the 2022 election cycle resulted in a surge in political campaign spending. Over $110 million was raised and spent by these committees, with more than 90 percent of the funds going towards gubernatorial campaigns. In fact, the 2022 gubernatorial race broke previous fundraising records, with a total of approximately $170 million raised between the two general election candidates.

Nationally, the 2022 midterm election was the most expensive in American history, with a staggering $16.7 billion spent on state and federal races. This highlights the need for measures such as the LIMIT Act to address the growing influence of money in politics and ensure a fair and equitable political process.

Rep. Park's proposal to eliminate leadership committees is a step towards curbing the excessive influence of money in politics. By setting limits on campaign contributions, this legislation aims to level the playing field and prevent any individual, corporation, or special interest group from buying undue influence over the political system.

The LIMIT Act is an important legislative initiative that seeks to restore balance and fairness in Georgia's political landscape. It remains to be seen how the bill will progress through the legislative process, but Rep. Park's efforts to limit the influence of money in politics have garnered support from those who believe in the importance of a truly representative democracy.
