U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) toured Atlanta's Sweet Auburn District last week, participating in a roundtable discussion with community leaders, determining how they can use new grant funding set aside as a part of the Inflation Reduction Act, according to a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Congress passed the multi-billion dollar spending package back in August, Pelosi was joined by Congresswoman Nikema Williams (D-GA), to highlight $3 billion in new funding allocated to reconnect neighborhoods impacted by transportation infrastructure.
"Atlanta has the opportunity to be an example to the country," FOX 5 reports Pelosi said during the event at Big Bethel AME Church.
In justifying the government's actions, Williams pointed to higher rates of asthma for people living in the area as well as hotter temperatures because of idling cars, FOX 5 reports.
According to the report, this comes as Republican lawmakers have constantly pushed back against the new legislation, arguing that all the additional spending will only serve to further stall the already sputtering economy.
Groups can apply for the grant pilot program at grants.gov, the report states.
