The Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia, will remain closed until December 17 due to an outbreak of Streptococcus Zooepidemicus, also known as Strep Zoo. This decision follows the deaths of three dogs under the center's care since November 29.
Testing conducted with the University of Georgia confirmed the presence of Strep Zoo, a bacterial infection that causes severe respiratory distress and other symptoms in dogs. The condition can lead to rapid health decline within 24 to 48 hours if not treated promptly with antibiotics.
"Pet owners should monitor pets carefully for symptoms and seek immediate veterinary attention if symptoms arise," authorities advised. Although Strep Zoo is zoonotic and can transfer between animals and humans, human cases are rare and typically linked to underlying health issues or weakened immune systems.
While adoptions are on hold, Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement will continue processing pet reclaims. They will also accept sick, injured, or aggressive animals to ensure community safety.
