Gwinnett County District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III has been recognized with the 2024 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and Association of Black Health System Pharmacists Joint Leadership Award. This award highlights his exceptional leadership in health-system pharmacy practice and his commitment to improving public health, particularly for underrepresented communities.

With over thirty years of experience as a licensed pharmacist, Commissioner Watkins is known for his dedication to health equity and diversity in the healthcare workforce. He has been an advocate for policies that enhance access to quality healthcare.

“Receiving the 2024 ASHP and ABHP Joint Leadership Award is both a humbling and motivating experience,” said Watkins. “It reaffirms my commitment to ensuring that all communities — especially those that have historically been underserved — have access to the health care resources they need to thrive. As both a pharmacist and a public servant, I will continue to advocate for health policies that support equity, inclusion and wellness for all.”

During his tenure on the Board of Commissioners, Watkins has prioritized public service and health equity. Early in his term, he supported increased access to COVID-19 vaccinations by helping establish mass vaccination sites in south Gwinnett. Additionally, he has promoted mental health services through expanding OneStop 4 Help centers in Centerville and Lawrenceville. Watkins has also been a vocal supporter of improved healthcare services for veterans in Gwinnett.

The ASHP/ABHP Joint Leadership Award annually honors individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership in pharmacy practice and patient outcomes improvement. Commissioner Watkins' efforts toward healthcare access, preventive care, and addressing social determinants of health position him as a leader in both public service and healthcare sectors.

The award was officially presented at the ASHP Awards Luncheon on December 10 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
