The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has taken a significant step towards updating the Sugarloaf Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) Master Plan. On Tuesday, the board voted in favor of proposing an update to this strategic framework which is designed to guide future development in the Sugarloaf area.
This initiative is part of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s LCI program, which provides financial support for local planning efforts. The update aims to reinforce Gwinnett County's long-term vision for the district, according to Board Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. "Our goal is to keep the Sugarloaf area a vibrant economic and cultural hub for Gwinnett County," Hendrickson stated. "This update will allow us to refine our vision for the district, strengthen infrastructure and create an even more welcoming environment for businesses, residents and visitors."
The original Sugarloaf LCI Master Plan was established in 2018 and has been instrumental in driving strategic growth and new investments in infrastructure within the region. Last December, the county adopted a suboverlay district aimed at encouraging further redevelopment.
To maintain progress, the proposed plan update will target land use recommendations, pinpoint necessary infrastructure improvements, and foster creative placemaking efforts. The project budget stands at $350,000 with a mandatory 20% local contribution amounting to $70,000. The Sugarloaf Community Improvement District will collaborate with the county on this project by sharing the local match cost equally; thus, Gwinnett County’s share will be $35,000.
Should it receive approval, community engagement and stakeholder input opportunities will be integral parts of the planning process.
