Gov. Brian P. Kemp praised the United Way of Greater Atlanta and HomeFirst Gwinnett for their efforts to support women and children with the opening of a homeless shelter.

HomeFirst Gwinnett will open its Norcross shelter in a month or two to house homeless women and children. It will operate under the auspices of the United Way of Greater Atlanta, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

“Thankful to @UnitedWayATL and @HomeFirst Gwinn for their work to end homelessness and support women and children,” Gov. Brian P. Kemp said in a Tweet.

The United Way of Greater Atlanta highlighted its partners in a Tweet, who are assisted the nonprofit in opening Gwinnett County’s first operating homeless shelter designed to house both women and children.

The Shelter in Gwinnett County is the first shelter to admit women and children within 60 days of applying for housing, the AJC reported.

It will assist women and children with job opportunities, health care and permanent housing, the United Way said in its Tweet.

The COVID-19 pandemic offered hurdles to opening the shelter. The newspaper reported that it will initially offer 20 beds for up to three families, a result of social distancing requirements.

Gwinnett County has provided approximately $2.6 million to HomeFirst Gwinnett to help fund some of the costs of the shelter, the AJC reported.

Single women and single mothers can use the shelter’s amenities. They will be able to stay for up to three months as staff helps them transition to permanent housing.
