Falcons’ fans didn’t have much to cheer about during the season, but next year looks a little brighter as quarterback Matt Ryan said he wants to come back.
“I want to be here," Ryan, who has two years remaining on his current contract, said on the team's website. "I believe in this team. I think the coaching staff did a great job.”
The 2021-22 season was a rebuilding one for the Falcons, who finished out of the playoffs with a 7-10 record.
Ryan has been the quarterback since 2008, missing only a few games during those 14 seasons.
The coach refused to be ensnared by reporters’ questions after a disappointing season when he was asked if Ryan would be back.
"Matt knows how we feel about him, but you're not going to get a hot take from me today to ever back ourselves into a corner,” Coach Arthur Smith said after the last game of the season. "I don't care — everything is evaluated every year, and that's the way it goes in the NFL.”
Scott Bair, a digital editor for the team, said building around Ryan is the best choice for the team in terms of continuity and economics.
“I think we're going to make improvements this offseason, continue to grow as a team and be better than we were this year,” Ryan said of the team’s prospects.
