A new set of safety measures will be implemented by the Gwinnett County Public School System at the start of the next school year, a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta said.
Gwinnett County Public Schools Police Chief Tony Lockhart said it is necessary to draw a fine line between keeping the school safe and making it look like a military installation.
“We're not just reacting, but we're being proactive," Lockhart told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Among the new measures, Gwinnett County schools will implement a new visitor check-in program called “Raptor,” which will send visitors to designated doors to be buzzed in; the FOX 5 report said. Each visitor will be run through a database to confirm they are not a registered sex offender, and those who come back clean will be allowed to enter.
Fifteen schools across the state are now equipped with secure vestibules as an extra layer of security, while at least 19 other schools are in the process of receiving the security upgrade.
With the new school year set to kick off soon, the district has 98 armed school resource officers and plans to hire approximately 10 more; the FOX 5 report said. Currently, most of the SROs are stationed at middle and high schools.
