In response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Congress passed three federal funding packages that provided immediate and direct economic assistance to state and local educational agencies under Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) legislation. These funds were provided to support school districts’ academic and non-academic areas most affected by COVID-19. The additional funds were earmarked to help safely reopen schools, address significant gaps in learning, and support continued efforts to reduce the effects of COVID-19 on students and families.
This financial support under ESSER is coming from the three federal funding packages. In the latest round of this funding, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is allotted $282.4 million under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act. This money is available to the district from March 24, 2021, to September 30, 2023. We invite our community to keep reading to learn more about how GCPS is using these funds to address learning loss and achievement gaps and to focus on teacher retention and recruitment. In addition, we hope you will provide feedback on our plans.
Previously, GCPS was allocated $32.5 million under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, known as CARES Act I (which was available March 13, 2020, to September 30, 2021) and $125.7 million under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act (available January 5, 2021, to September 30, 2022).
