A temporary extension of the state’s 29 cents per gallon gas tax was issued Thursday by Gov. Brian Kemp, ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
In a report by FOX 5 Atlanta Thursday, Kemp highlighted the extension, calling his move part of efforts to combat surging prices across the country.
"I’m going to respond to record-high inflation and continuing supply chain issues by empowering Georgians to keep their money in their own pockets while we keep goods flowing," Kemp told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Kemp first signed the bill in March to pause the gas tax after fuel prices spiked to record highs, largely stemming from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At that time, it was set to expire on May 31.
With his new executive order, the pause is extended until through July 14 and a second executive order is set to renew Georgia's state of emergency due to supply chain disruptions, the report said.
According to the report, Kemp called on federal officials to enact policies for “greater American energy independence,” to restore the economy to full operation.
According to AAA, the average price per gallon in Georgia was $4.14 as of Thursday, a drop from 3 cents the day before, though much lower than the national average of $4.60 per gallon.
