A new ordinance set to impound vehicles of those charged with drag racing on the streets has been approved by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, a recent report from FOX 5 Atlanta said.
Gwinnett County resident Jeff Schrader noted that he has witnessed much of the carnage from his nearby home, including one incident in which he jumped his fence to record a video of street racers and stunt drivers blocking the intersection of Peachtree Corners and Spalding Drive while performing outrageous shenanigans.
"They are right in the middle of cars videotaping," Schrader told FOX 5 Atlanta. "You see the cars going all around the kids, it's crazy!"
With the new ordinance, Gwinnett County officials are following a precedent set by Atlanta and Sandy Springs, where officials moved in 2021 to pass similar ordinances against reckless street racing; FOX 5 reported.
Gwinnett Police Chief J.D. McClure has worked tirelessly to convince the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to approve the new ordinance.
"The ability to impound vehicles under a county ordinance for 30 days or until adjudication of the offense should serve as a deterrent for all offenders,” he told FOX 5.
As recently as May, Gwinnett County police and other local departments said they made more than 80 arrests and impounded at least two dozen cars for racing.
